Beam tests of lead tungstate crystal matrices and a silicon strip preshower detector for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter
نویسنده
چکیده
Further tests of lead tungstate crystal matrices made in high energy electron beams in 1996, using new crystals, new APDs and an improved test setup confirm that an energy resolution of better than 0.6% at 100 GeV can be obtained when the longitudinal uniformity of the struck crystal is adequate. Light loss measurements under low dose irradiation are reported. It is shown that there is no loss of energy resolution after irradiation and it is demonstrated that the calibration change due to light loss can be tracked with a precision monitoring system. Successful tests with a preshower device, equipped with silicon strip detector readout, are also described. To be submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth.

Measurements of PbWO4 crystals behaviour under irradiation
Lead Tungstate crystals for the CMS detector at LHC have to withstand severe levels of radiation. Presented here are measurement techniques and results on crystal behaviour under gamma irradiation from tests at ETH/PSI in conditions similar to what is expected during operation of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter. Presented at International Workshop on Lead Tungstate crystals, Rome, Italy, Oc...
متن کاملThe CMS ECAL project – Overview and status report
An overview is given of the Lead Tungstate (PbWO4) electromagnetic crystal calorimeter for the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva. This includes a description of the engineering design, the development of the calorimeter components, the read-out system and results obtained in particle beams. Presented at IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, Toronto, Canada, November 19...
متن کاملECAL Front-End Monitoring in the CMS experiment
The CMS detector at LHC is equipped with a high precision lead tungstate crystal electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL). The front-end boards and the photodetectors are monitored using a network of DCU (Detector Control Unit) chips located on the detector electronics. The DCU data are accessible through token rings controlled by an XDAQ based software component. Relevant parameters are transferred ...
متن کاملThe CMS Lead Tungstate Electromagnetic Calorimeter
The CERN LHC will open a new regime in the exploration of fundamental interactions. Of central importance to these studies will be the precise measurement of high energy electrons and photons. The CMS experiment therefore incorporates a high resolution electromagnetic calorimeter comprising 76000 lead tungstate crystals, covering almost 4pi, and capable of operating reliably for ten years in a ...
متن کاملThe CMS experiment at the CERN LHC
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and leadlead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 1034 cm−2s−1 (1027 cm−2s−1). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magneticfield and large-bore superconducting sol...
